This happens to me con-stant-ly.
I’m using dairy as an example, but people say this to me for all sorts of things, and not just things to do with being vegan.
The conversation goes a little like this (as an example):
Friend: “So, you don’t even eat dairy?”
Me: “Oh, no, after knowing what I now know, I just couldn’t anymore”
Friend: “Oh, don’t tell me, I don’t want to know.”
Why don’t you want to know?
I know why.
Because you think that if you know, then you’ll also give up dairy.
You’re worried that you’ll be convinced dairy is not good for you, for animals, for the environment or for your hip pocket.
Knowing won’t give you AIDS, turn you into a zombie or make you grow seven arms.
Is knowing stuff such a bad thing?
I’m cool. If someone says they don’t want to know, good for them, my lips are sealed, and I’m truly not bothered.
I’m just genuinely baffled by that response.
Because I want to know ehvareething!
- What is that ingredient?
- Do they test on animals?
- How is that made?
- What other uses does that ingredient have?
- How does it get packaged?
- Where is it made?
- What other uses ingredient #4 has?
- How does this compare to the other ingredient on the shelf?
- What are the health benefits?
- What are the health risks?
I must admit, I do have vivid memories of being at the Fremantle Markets as a child and being so damned curious about how this wallet on display would open. Meanwhile the lady behind the counter was shrieking at my mum to get me to put it down before I broke it. I just always have to know!! I’m a curious soul.
If you hear or watch or read something (as I have done at times) and thought ‘that sounds like a load of absolute crap,’ then I totally get you, regardless of what your point of view is.
If you don’t want to know, good for you, but I’m scratching my head over here…
